Introduction to Songwriting Course
You cannot discuss popular music without including the art of songwriting. If you have always wanted to become involved in the creative process, but not known where to start, then this is the course for you.
Designed for both songwriters and singer/songwriters, the course starts from first principles, introducing topics such as lyric writing, song form and structure, and harmony and theory. Subjects are always discussed and illuminated using common popular music examples, which stops class becoming a dry study of theory, rather a real set of skills the songwriter can employ.
This very hands-on aspect of the course is further reinforced through weekly set assignments where you will learn to apply these techniques to your own work. This will not only ensure the skills are practically applied in your work, but that as the course progresses you will begin to build up a repertoire of original songs.
The ICMP's 'Introduction to Songwriting' course covers the following main topics:
> Fundamental harmony and theory
> Simple chord patterns, relative minor, three chord trick
> Lyrics: Basic rhyming schemes, narrative voice, telling a story
> Writing a melody
> Song Structure: components of a song, classic forms
> Stylistic awareness
