The course addresses five main subject areas, as follows: 

> Musicianship  The course supports this through the development of vocal technique, melody and harmony, keyboards, guitar, aural, ensemble and arranging skills.

> Songwriting  You will study the range of styles and techniques used in creative songwriting, and gain important historical perspectives on some of the great practitioners of recent years.

> Marketing and Promotion  In this part of the course you will learn how to develop your profile, build a website, develop and utilise social networking tools including MySpace and package and present your material in the most advantageous way.

> Music Business  In this subject area you will learn how the business functions, who the key players are and how to leverage your ability into a sustainable career

> Performance  The disciplines required to perform and present your material on stage, advice on how to get a gig and regular practical opportunities to showcase your material both internally and externally are a key feature of the programme.

GENERAL COURSE DETAILS

Course Name:  Professional Diploma in Songwriting

Qualification: The awarding body is Edexcel and the course is Level 5.  Students may progress onto other Higher Education courses

Start dates: April 2010, October 2010

Duration: 30 weeks full-time made up of 3 x 10-week terms

Class Times: 16/17 hours/week, 3 days/week

Cost: £5,250

Entry Req: All students will have intermediate vocal and performance skills and will be actively engaged in creative songwriting.  The qualification sits at Level 5 on the QFC and therefore most students will have a National Diploma or Certificate, suitable A levels or relevant experience.
